The long-nosed, solid four-seat Saab 900 convertible is no sports car - despite the impressive power outputs of the turbo models - but it's a comfortable way to cruise in style. The subsequent 900 (1994-98) is pretty, but never quite had the same character, though the 9-3 (launched 1998, new-generation model from 2003) is a little more distinctive. The classic-shaped 900 looks less flash than a contemporary BMW 3-Series, and has a certain classless appeal whatever its age, although spoilered, body-kitted Aero models are rather over-the-top, especially in bright yellow. The light-pressure turbo models are the best buys, as the full-on blown versions can be a bit of a handful when you combine front-wheel drive, scuttle shake and loads of torque, and the non-turbo version is somewhat sluggish. Don't be afraid of monster mileages - the Saab 900 will happily run to well over 200,000 miles - but it has to have been properly maintained, and don't expect keeping a 900 to be cheap. Turbo models will have leather upholstery, heated seats, electric windows, alloys and central locking, and the body kit piles on as the power increases. The S Special LPT version has a colour-coded hood and a walnut facia; the Monte Carlo edition just has the Aero three-spoke alloys. Whoever said that Saabs were sensible?

Jeg har nu endnu ikke set en cabriolet til £1000, må jeg erkende...
